After many years decorating, I realize the enormous effort it takes to pull it all together and place those finishing touches on a project. Simply chosing which fabrics to pull, let alone deciding on the shape of a sofa, or wall color, may seem like small decisions to many. As a designer, these are the final little details which I take the time to hone in on, separating a house from a home. Before getting down to those details, first you'll need to decide where to start! No need to feel overwhelmed, you can always find a starting point in something. Perhaps it's the tone of an old wooden frame, or a piece of crystal orb. Whatever that thing may be, always run with it. Every awe inspiring room begins with a simple thought.
In my most recent project, I inherited a large decorative wooden sail boat, which inspired me to add in wide plank floors with sisal grass weave carpets, plus an oversized farm table, accented with large organic grasses in a vase. One thing lead to another, taking me into the foyer, where I incorporated a lacquered blue/green/teal paint finish for the cieling. The second floor foyer landing features a sepia toned palm leaf wall covering. An oversized ratan style chandelier will complete the space, tying both levels together.
With inspiration levels at a high, I decided to convert an unnecessary closet into a unique wet bar! Filling the nook with a cabinet on the bottom, an oil rubbed bronze sink, and Capri inspired mosaic tiles on top will complete the old time West Indies feel. With two Billy Baldwin slipper chairs and a small martini table, guests are immediately welcomed to have a seat and take a sip.
When it comes time to delve into the details, one word comes to mind. Color! I selected a few sixties styled- shades ranging from olives, and teals, to dusty-mint grey tones. These colors will be displayed in accent fabrics, wallpapers, and wall art.
Takeaway Tip: Popping old photos in new frames and arranging them throughout the house is always a good idea. Call Kate to have any image sized and framed!
Until next time, enjoy the rest of your summer!
